Where it is

Lake Ida sits just north of downtown Delray Beach. On this site it covers the homes north of Lake Ida Road, east of I-95 and the shore of Lake Ida, west of Federal Highway and south of the Delray Beach city line, with Swinton Avenue running down the middle. Atlantic Avenue's restaurants and galleries are about half a mile south of Lake Ida Road, and the beach roughly two miles east. Most homes carry a 33444 ZIP code.

A little history

According to the Delray Beach Historical Society, Delray founder William S. Linton named the lake for his wife, Ida. The lake was once part of the Everglades and about twice its present size before drainage work in the 1910s lowered it, and early settlers farmed pineapples on the surrounding land. Homes went up from the 1920s, including houses by local architect Samuel Ogren, and the neighborhood counted poet Edna St. Vincent Millay among its residents.

The lake and the parks

Lake Ida is a freshwater lake with Palm Beach County parks and public boat ramps on its shores, popular for paddling, fishing and water-skiing. It is not connected to the ocean. Lake Drive, Lake Shore Drive and Hibiscus Lane hold the homes closest to the water, and several back directly onto it.

The homes

Lake Ida is made up of dozens of small subdivisions, from Lake Ida Shores, Lake Ida Manor and Lake Ida Gardens to Totterdale, High Acres, Ida Lake Terrace, Del Ida Park, Dell Park, Lake Eden and Lake Shore Estates. Many original homes are one-story houses from the 1950s on lots of about a quarter acre, and those lots, with no HOA and a short drive to Atlantic Avenue, have made Lake Ida one of Delray's busiest areas for new custom homes. County deed records show 124 sales in the last 12 months at a median of $1.41M. See which streets hold the most value on the streets & values page, and every home on the 3D map.

HOA and building

Most Lake Ida homes are not in a mandatory homeowners association. Renovations and new homes follow City of Delray Beach zoning, permitting and flood rules rather than an architectural review board, and a few newer enclaves have small associations of their own. Confirm the rules for a specific address before you buy or build.

Schools

MLS records for Lake Ida homes list these public schools:

  • Plumosa School of the Arts (K–8)
  • Carver Community Middle School
  • Atlantic Community High School, home of an International Baccalaureate program

Confirm the assignment for a specific address with the School District of Palm Beach County, since boundaries can change. Private schools nearby include Saint Andrew's School and Pine Crest in Boca Raton and American Heritage Delray.

Getting around

I-95 is right at the neighborhood's western edge, with interchanges at Atlantic Avenue and Linton Boulevard. The Delray Beach Tri-Rail station is a short drive south-west, and Boca Raton Airport is about 15 minutes away. Palm Beach International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International are each roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car. Times are approximate and depend on traffic.
